Reaching Sabarimala takes a little planning — the temple is seasonal, taxis can't park at the base, and the final stretch is on foot. Here is what Ayyappa devotees travelling from Kochi need to know.
When the temple is open
Sabarimala opens mainly for the Mandala-Makaravilakku season, roughly mid-November to mid-January, plus the first five days of each Malayalam month and a few special days. Dates shift slightly each year, so confirm before planning travel.
How to reach from Kochi
The base point is Pamba, about 150 km from Cochin Airport via Kottayam and Erumeli — around 4.5 hours by road. From Pamba, devotees trek the final climb to the hilltop temple at 480 m.
The Pamba & Nilakkal parking rule
This trips up many first-timers: during season, private taxis cannot park at Pamba. Vehicles wait at Nilakkal base camp, about 18 km away, connected to Pamba by a frequent KSRTC shuttle. Plan your taxi pickup point as Nilakkal, or arrange a small surcharge for direct Pamba access where permitted.
Tips for the journey
- Travel overnight to reach for early darshan — our fares include night charges
- Book an experienced Sabarimala-route driver who knows the season rules
- Groups should consider a Tempo Traveller (12-26 seat)
- Carry minimal luggage for the trek; the irumudikettu is essential for darshan
Booking your taxi
We run dedicated Kochi to Sabarimala transfers with drivers experienced in the Pamba and Nilakkal regulations. See our Kochi to Sabarimala taxi page for fixed fares, or combine it with Guruvayoor and other temples in a pilgrimage package.
