The short answer
September to March is the best time to visit Munnar. The monsoon has washed the hills a vivid green, the air is cool, and the tea gardens look their best. If you want the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures, aim for the December to February window.
Season by season
September to November — post-monsoon green
The hills are at their lushest after the rains. Waterfalls along the Kochi-Munnar road run full, and the tea estates glow. Occasional showers linger early in the season but ease by November. Our favourite window for photographers.
December to February — peak & coolest
Clear skies, crisp mornings and temperatures that can drop to 10-15 degrees at night. This is peak tourist season, so book your taxi and stays well ahead. Carry warm layers for early starts.
March to May — warm but quieter
Days warm up but Munnar stays far cooler than the plains. Fewer crowds and better hotel rates make this a good shoulder season, with the Neelakurinji-era slopes still pleasant.
June to August — the monsoon
Heavy rain, mist and the occasional landslide on ghat sections. The hills are dramatic and empty, but plan for slower driving and limited views. Our experienced ghat drivers handle the conditions, just allow extra time.
Getting to Munnar
Most travellers reach Munnar by road from Kochi — about 110 km and 3.5 hours from Cochin Airport. A chauffeured taxi is the easiest option, with stops at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls along the way. See our Kochi to Munnar taxi page for fixed fares.
What to pack
Whatever the season, bring a light jacket for the evenings, comfortable walking shoes for the estates and viewpoints, and motion-sickness remedies if you are sensitive to the 15-plus hairpin bends on the climb.
