Five days is the sweet spot for a first Kerala trip — enough to see the hills, a wildlife reserve and the backwaters without rushing. Here is the route we drive most often, starting and ending at Cochin Airport.
Day 1 — Kochi to Munnar
Pick up at the airport and drive up to Munnar (110 km, 3.5 hours), stopping at the Cheeyappara waterfalls and a spice garden. Arrive by afternoon and settle in among the tea estates.
Day 2 — Munnar sightseeing
A full day at altitude: Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and the Tea Museum. Sunset over the valleys is the highlight.
Day 3 — Munnar to Thekkady
A 90 km, 3-hour drive through cardamom hills to Thekkady. Spend the afternoon on a Periyar lake boat safari or touring a spice plantation.
Day 4 — Thekkady to Alleppey
Descend to the backwaters and board a private houseboat around noon for an overnight cruise through Kuttanad's canals, with all meals aboard.
Day 5 — Alleppey to Kochi
Disembark after breakfast and drive back to Kochi (about 75 km) for a timed airport drop. If your flight is late, add a few hours in Fort Kochi.
Practical tips
- Book a chauffeured taxi for the whole loop — it removes all the logistics
- An Innova Crysta is the most comfortable choice for the ghat roads
- Carry light layers for Munnar and Thekkady evenings
- Reserve the houseboat ahead in peak season (Dec-Jan)
We run exactly this route as our 5-Day Grand Kerala package, all-inclusive of car, fuel, driver and the houseboat night.
