About the route
The run north from Kozhikode to Bekal follows the coast through Vadakara, Thalassery and Kannur before reaching Kasaragod district. It is around 180 km and takes about four hours at a steady pace. Bekal Fort itself is the largest in Kerala, sitting right on the shoreline, and the surrounding beaches are markedly less crowded than those further south.

October to March is the best window, and it overlaps with the north Malabar Theyyam season — if you are travelling then, it is worth asking us about shrine timings near Kannur and Kasaragod. Bekal Fort is most photogenic in the late afternoon.
