About the route
The Calicut to Ooty route climbs the Thamarassery ghat into Wayanad, crosses into Tamil Nadu through the Muthanga and Bandipur sanctuary belt, then takes on the Nilgiri ghat up to Udhagamandalam. It is around 185 km and realistically a five-hour drive. The sanctuary section has a night traffic ban, which shapes when you can travel.

Best time & tips
The Bandipur and Muthanga stretch is closed to traffic overnight, usually from around 9pm to 6am, so plan a daytime departure. April to June and September to November are the most pleasant months in the Nilgiris. Many travellers break the journey with a night in Wayanad rather than doing it in one push.
