Wayanad: getting there and what is worth your time

Wayanad sits on a plateau, so the climb is over quickly and the driving up top is easy.

Wayanad is a plateau rather than a peak, which changes the experience. The hard part is getting up; once you are there, the roads between sights are gentle and the distances short.

Getting there

From Kozhikode (Calicut) is the usual approach: about 75 km over the Thamarassery ghat and its nine numbered hairpin bends. Allow two and a half hours. Lorry traffic on the bends is the main delay, and in monsoon the road occasionally closes for landslips — the alternative is the Kuttiady route, which is longer but gentler.

From Kochi is roughly 250 km and a long day, usually via Thrissur and Kozhikode. Most people break it rather than doing it in one push.

Where to base yourself

• Kalpetta — central, practical, closest to most sights.
• Vythiri — the resort belt, in thicker forest, good if you plan to stay put.
• Sulthan Bathery — east side, handy for Edakkal Caves and the Muthanga sanctuary.

What is actually worth it

Edakkal Caves. Petroglyphs thought to be thousands of years old, reached by a steep stepped climb of about a kilometre. The carvings are remarkable; the climb is genuinely tiring and not suitable for everyone. Go early.

Chembra Peak. The heart-shaped lake photograph comes from here. It is a real trek with a permit and limited daily numbers, and access is sometimes restricted during dry months for fire risk. Check before you plan a day around it.

Banasura Sagar Dam. India's largest earth dam, with islands in the reservoir and boating. Easy, family-friendly, busy at weekends.

Soochipara and Meenmutty falls. Both spectacular after rain, both requiring a walk in. Meenmutty is the harder of the two.

Wildlife. Muthanga and Tholpetty sanctuaries run morning and afternoon safaris with limited slots. Elephants are common, tigers effectively never. Book at the gate early or in advance.

Thirunelli Temple. Ancient, remote, in forest near the Karnataka border. A long drive from Kalpetta but the setting is extraordinary.

When to go

October to May is comfortable. The monsoon turns the district a startling green and fills every waterfall, but the ghat road is at its most demanding and leeches are a genuine nuisance on forest walks. March to May is warm but clear.

Practical notes

• Many sights close by 5pm and stop selling tickets earlier — plan mornings, not afternoons.
• Plastic is restricted across much of the district. Carry a refillable bottle.
• Cash is useful; card acceptance is patchy outside the towns.
• An SUV is more comfortable than a sedan on the ghat, particularly with a full car.
