Alleppey houseboats: what nobody tells you first

Most of the cruising happens between noon and sunset — boats anchor for the night.

Here is the thing that surprises people: a houseboat does not cruise all night. Boats leave the jetty around noon, cruise through the afternoon, and anchor before dark. You sleep moored in a quiet stretch of backwater, not gliding through it.

That is not a scam — it is a safety rule, and a sensible one. But it changes how you should plan the day.

The actual timings

Check-in is usually around noon, checkout around nine the next morning. Cruising stops in the late afternoon. So the useful window is roughly five hours of movement, then a long quiet evening on the water, then a short morning cruise back.

This means arriving in Alleppey at 4pm wastes most of what you paid for. Get there by late morning. Coming from Kochi, that means leaving around 9am for the roughly 75 km run down the coast.

How the categories differ

Boats are usually sold as deluxe, premium or luxury, and the labels vary between operators. What actually changes:

• Air conditioning. Often bedroom-only, and frequently only from about 9pm to 6am because it runs off a generator. Ask specifically.
• Upper deck. Worth having. It is where you will spend the afternoon.
• Bedroom count. One, two or three. A three-bedroom boat is not three times the boat — the shared spaces are similar.
• Age and upkeep. The biggest real difference, and the hardest to judge from photos. Recent photos beat brochure photos.

Food

Meals are included: lunch on boarding, dinner, breakfast. It is cooked onboard and it is usually very good — Kerala rice, fish curry, thoran, and often a whole karimeen if you want it. Say up front if you are vegetarian, need it mild, or have an allergy, because the cook shops before you board.

Is one night enough?

For most people, yes. The pleasure is in the slowness, and by the second afternoon many travellers are ready to move on. Two nights suits people who want to properly switch off and are happy reading on a deck.

If you are short on time, a shikara — the small covered canoe — for two or three hours gets you into the narrow canals a big houseboat cannot enter. Some people prefer it.

Alleppey or Kumarakom?

Alleppey has more boats, more choice and more traffic on the water. Kumarakom is quieter and greener, with the bird sanctuary nearby, but fewer operators. If it is your first time and you want the classic experience, Alleppey. If you have been before, or want calm, Kumarakom.

Practical notes

• Peak season is December and January — book well ahead and expect higher rates.
• The Nehru Trophy snake boat race falls in August and fills the town completely.
• Mosquitoes appear at dusk. Repellent is worth carrying even though most boats have nets.
